For the Birds is a classroom tool, so the bar for what we collect is deliberately low. Here is exactly what happens with student information.
What we collect
- Student first and last name (as entered at sign-up)
- A 4-digit PIN, used only to let the student sign back in to their own work — it is not an identifier we share with anyone
- Lesson progress (which steps are complete and when)
- Scores and AI-generated feedback on written responses
- The student's chosen interface language
We do not collect email addresses, birth dates, photos, location, or anything else. We do not ask students for any information beyond a name and PIN.
Why we collect it
Only so students can pick up where they left off between class sessions, and so their teacher can review their work and grade it. That's the entire purpose.
Who can see it
A student's name, progress, scores, and written answers are visible only to that student (via their PIN) and to the teacher administering the class. The site's operator can access data only as needed to keep the service running. No one else.
How long we keep it
Student records are kept while the class is using the lab, and removed after the school year ends or when deletion is requested — whichever comes first.
Deleting data
A student, parent, or teacher can request deletion of any student's record at any time by emailing klitman@schools.nyc.gov. We remove the student's name, progress, and scores, and confirm once it is done.
Selling or sharing data
Never. Student data is not sold, rented, or shared with advertisers, and we use no third-party analytics or tracking scripts. The site sets no advertising cookies.
